a Continent of Contrasts / Ein Kontinent der Kontraste

All in all, I spent some five years in Africa, partly as a tourist (e.g. Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, Yemen) but mainly related to my work with the UN and the EU on human rights, election and institution building (Rwanda 1994/5, Sierra Leone 2002, Nigeria 2003, Tanzania 2009/10, Somalia 2014-2016). During these years I experienced both the beauty and fascination of this continent as well as the horrible atrocities and human rights violations that took place and still happen in parts of Africa.

Please find below a number of blogs showing a cross section of my work and travel in East and West Africa.

Insgesamt verbrachte ich rund fünf Jahre in Afrika, teils als Tourist (zB. Djibouti, Eritrea, Äthiopien, Kenia, Namibia, Uganda, Jemen) aber hauptsächlich in Verbindung mit meiner Arbeit für die UNO und die Europäische Union im Bereich Menschenrechte, Wahlen und Aufbau von staatlichen Institutionen (Ruanda 1994/5, Sierra Leone 2002, Nigeria 2003, Tansania 2009/10, Somalia 2014-2016). Während dieser Jahre lernte ich sowohl die Schönheit und Faszination dieses Kontinents als auch die grausamen Verbrechen und schweren Menschenrechtsverletzungen kennen, die in einzelnen Ländern passierten und noch immer geschehen.
