Travelling through Central America
Since early May 2018 I am travelling through Central America, a region to which I am particularly emotionally attached. During the years 1979 till 1987 I have been working several months as a freelance journalist in Nicaragua and El Salvador. This part of my journey therefore also goes along with unearthing memories from 35 or 40 years ago.
However, the travel so far is not without obstacles. Sadly, Nicaragua is currently affected by a deep political crisis and sever human rights violations are committed by the police. Protestors are intercepting the main traffic routes which during my stay made it very difficult to travel to the North-East of the country.
In Guatemala, which will be my next destination, the Volcán de Fuego erupted last week killing at least 75 people with many more missing.
For June/July it is planned that my partner Ursula Forster, who has quit her job in Austria, will join me again. The plan is to travel together through Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and Southern Mexico before we will have another break in August in Austria.
The car still functions without problems. Since my start in Montevideo / Uruguay in December 2016 I have driven some 45,000 km.
